Algorithm: A set of explicit, finite, and precisely determined rules, the step-by-step application of which to a complex problem will yield a solution or optimal results. Also: Design, Formula, Device, Innovation, machine, method, Principle, Process, Breakthrough, etc.

Because the rules defined by an algorithm are precise and can be applied without judgment, algorithms can be programmed into computers, digital hardware, DSP engines, FPGA, and ASICs.

An algorithm is also a recipe for designing efficient, fast, inexpensive, and complex machines with the least amount of resources.

For instance, the set of rules for doing multiplication or division is an algorithm.

Algorithm design does not stop with defining rules, it also defines the entire system architecture, implementation strategy, performance, and cost. Hence designing the correct algorithm is crucial to the success of any project.

There are many, many algorithms used and found in common household devices, electronic gadgets, devices that use Video, Audio, and other types of signals such as motion detector, air conditioner, dish washer, etc., etc.
